30 Minutes of Swimming the Breast Stroke
So what did yesterday consist of? – which, by the way, was the first day of Summer. Work, of course, followed by a quick dash home and off to the pool for a short 30 to 45 minute swim.
I had a great check-up a few weeks ago, but my physician suggested I try and get a third day of exercise in each week. And I enjoy swimming so why not? At least I will be able to stay cooled while keeping my heart rate up, which in turns burns the necessary calories.
The pool was quiet and I thoroughly enjoyed my time. My routine consisted of the following strokes:
- Butterfly Stroke: This is one of my favorite strokes. You can really get your heart rate up with this one. Just keep your arms moving. But don’t get exhausted – take breaks whenever necessary.
- Sidestroke: This one is really good to build up the strength in your arms. I could really feel the pull of the water.
- Backstroke: Now this one is my absolute favorite. I can hear myself breathe while feeling the sun on my face and I just took the swim at a very comfortable pace.
- Freestyle swimming: This is enjoyable by switching it up between hanging on the side of the pool or pretending to run-in-place.
- Dog Paddle: This stroke gets the heart pumping as well.

With yesterday’s swim out of the way, I have two more days to go and I’m really looking forward to swimming and staying cool while working out. In the long run, it beats walking in the park while it’s just so hot outside, not to mention all the humidity. What exercise will you choose to stay fit with during the hot months? Don’t forget to stay hydrated by drinking lots of water!
